Welcome back to Horizon! I hope that you had a lovely summer and are ready for the new school year. My name is Ms. Shay and I am very excited to continue as your music teacher this year. I am originally from Arizona in the United States, and I received my education from Western Michigan University. This is my sixth year teaching, and my third year here at Horizon. I look forward to getting to know your children better as we begin the school year together.
This term in Grade 3 we will begin to play the recorder as our instrumental focus. We will learn how to care for and maintain our instruments, as well as how to produce a good sound. We will work on learning many new notes and rhythms and be able to play basic songs.
A special note about recorders: Students are required to purchase and bring their recorders to each music class, as performance is a large part of their grade. There are two types of soprano recorders, Baroque and German. Although they look similar, the fingerings (how to play the notes) are different between the two types. We will be learning how to play Baroque recorder, so please only purchase that type. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at email@example.com.
I’m looking forward to a great year!
