Week 8!

Dear parents,

Despite the rainy weather canceling a few of our school events, we had lots of interesting projects and activities to engage the students in school!

Inquiry (Social Studies, Science): The big inquiry project of the week was performing a student-created experiment! Students closed their eyes and held their noses to see if they could tell what kind of taste the various snacks they brought were. We even did a surprise test where Mr. Soong brought some interesting objects for them to test. We started our posters to be displayed around the school next week!

Writing: Students are doing a great job with their writing, already writing 300-400 word journals. This week, we focused on word blends and compound words. They also learned the three key things to explain about for their inquiry posters, a statement, a why, and an example.

Reading: We did our first reading assessment. We will be doing these periodically to see which areas each individual student needs to work on. This week, we enjoyed some free reading time in the classroom. They really enjoyed the quiet time reading their friends all around the room. I can already see many of them developing the love of reading!

Math: It was numeracy week this week so students enjoyed many math games and challenges throughout the week. In our class, we learned about multiplication and also finding products from using different symbols and numbers.

Next week: We will begin learning about our new country, USA, Hawaii and start our letter exchange and Skype with an elementary school on the island of Oahu where Mr. Soong used to teach! We also will continue on our inquiry posters. For math, we will continue multiplication with a focus on word problem solving and learning math terminology.
